Your trip to Geneva would be surely incomplete if you happen to miss out a visit to the European Headquarters of the United Nations. The Palais and its buildings constitute the second-largest building complex in Europe after Versailles.
The sprawling complex is accessible only via guided tour, offering unique insight into the inner workings of the world’s most important international body. You are sure to get impressed by witnessing its 2,000 seat Assembly Hall and the Council Chamber decorated with gold murals depicting the human struggle for peace.
The building popularly known as The Palace of Nations was built between 1929 and 1936 to serve as the headquarters of the League of Nations. Since 1946 it holds the pride of being the official home to the United Nations Office at Geneva after the Secretary General of the UN signed a Headquarters Agreement with the Swiss authorities, although Switzerland did not become a member of the UN until 2002.
The Palais stands at the Ariana Park, which has an interesting history attached to it. The park was donated to the Geneva Government in 1890 by Gustave de Revilliod de la Rive. In return, Gustave wanted three promises from the Government which the Government maintains to date:
- The park always remains accessible to the public.
- Gustave was buried in the park.
- The peacocks are allowed to roam freely on its grounds.
Beneath the Palais des Nations’s foundation stone is a time capsule containing a document listing the names of the League of Nations member states, a copy of the Covenant of the League, and specimen coins of all the countries represented at the league’s Tenth Assembly. A medal showing the Palais des Nations with the Jura Mountains in the background was struck in silvered bronze. The building overlooks Lake Geneva and has a clear view of the French Alps.
The building is open between 10:00 – 12:00, 14:00 – 16:00 Daily. 09:00 – 16:00 (July and August). Passport is required for admission.

The city of Geneva is dotted with various exotic tourist attractions each offering a unique face of nature. Among all these attractions, the Rousseau Island stands out due to its serenity offering a perfect romantic location. The island stands at the meeting point of the River Rhone and Lake Geneva. This small island was named after Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a Genevan philosopher and there is a statue of him on the island. The island is located near the right bank of Geneva’s shore and is connected to the des Bergues bridge and overlooks the Mont-Blanc bridge. It offers a 18th century style pavilion and an opportunity to dine at the little restaurant amidst the beauty of nature. The island is a heaven for those who are interested in sunning or relaxing.
Apart from the fascinating views of the city and lake which can be seen from the island, Rousseau Island also has a bird sanctuary, beautiful plants, trees and gardens.
However, looking at this beautiful island, one can never relate to this fact that it had a troubled past. But this is a truth. Surrounded by walls at the end of the 16th century, it served as a bastion to protect the city. In 1628 it became a shipyard and was known as the Island of the Boats. With the construction of the Bergues Bridge in 1832, which linked to the island by a footbridge, it was renamed after Genevan philosopher, Jean- Jacques Rousseau. It has since been transformed into a public garden, with a statue of this great man sculpted by the Genevan Pierre Pradier.

The grounds and premises of the Palais des Nations that is popularly known as seat of the United Nations Office at Geneva has many a good number of fine objects as donated and subjugated by Member States, private sponsors and artists. The Celestial Sphere in the Ariana Park of the Palais des Nations is one of those most popular objects. It is a massive four meter diameter Celestial Sphere is the work of the noted and much popular American sculptor Paul Manship (1885–1966). It was there donated in 1939 by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation to that times League of Nations building. It is also known as with another name Woodrow Wilson Memorial Sphere of the Palais des Nations. At present it is a symbol of Geneva International and of Geneva as the centric center of dialogue and regular peace.
The original thought of this sphere and globe emerged into the mind of Manship when he was contacted by the Board of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. Manship there was asked to given an idea about a memorial to President of the United States Woodrow Wilson as the starter and pioneer of the League of Nations. At that time the Palais des Nations was there on under construction. Before the sphere his first idea was about making two doors to the Assembly Hall from the Halle de Pas Perdus. Both the artist as well as donor, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, did not like this idea and expressed the unsuitably of the door as memorial. Then he proposed a large-scale version of the present celestial sphere, that h made after the years of study. It is based upon several earlier versions, including the Aero-Memorial in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It differs from these in that this Sphere has support of about four tortoises, taken from his models for the gates to the New York Bronx Zoo. .
He explained the sphere as in following words as, “The representation of the heavenly constellations is derived from Babylonia and Assyria: the Greeks and Latins added their names and gave the constellations a local significance in some cases and I have adhered as closely as possible to the ancient forms… harmonious ensemble”. After the approval from the committee as in the spring of 1936, as according to the approval of the committee Manship started working on sphere on a model in wax. He assembled the team of sculptors and other artists as to work upon the various aspects of the design. His time was consisted of the famous to that time including Angelo Colombo, Giuseppe Massari, and Richard Pousette-Dart. It was competed by in 1938. It measures around 410 centimeter in diameter and has total weight of 5,800 Kg. It as United Nations symbol was inaugurated in September 1939.

Palace of Nations
The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) is the second-largest among all the four major office sites of the United Nations and comes after the New York. It is located in the Palais des Nations building constructed for the League of Nations between 1929 and 1938 at Geneva in Switzerland. The UN was organized in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, as a measure to stop wars between fighting countries, and to give them a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions.
The Palais des Nations or Palace of Nations was constructed in Geneva, Switzerland, between 1929 and 1936 as the head of the League of Nations. The building was authorized as the home of the United Nations Office at Geneva till 1946 when the Secretary General of the UN signed a Headquarters Agreement with the Swiss authorities. But it is quite amazing to know that Switzerland was not a member of the United States till 2002.
In order to construct the building an architectural competition was organized in 1920 to select a design for the complex. A jury of architects was formed to choose out the best final design out of about 377 entries but lately failed to decide on the name of the winner. Anyhow, the five architects behind the leading entries were elected for the final design as: Carlo Broggi of Italy, Julien Flegenheimer of Switzerland, Camille Lefèvre and Henri-Paul Nénot of France, and Joseph Vago of Hungary. For designing the interiors of the building the donations from the League members were used there.
When the building was transferred to the United Nations in year 1950, there two new extensions were added to the building. Three floors were appended to the “K” building and the “D” building was made to keep the World Health Organization. The “E” building (or “New” Building) was finished in 1973 as a conference facility. With all these additions the complex was about 600 metres long, with 34 conference rooms and 2,800 offices.
Apart from United Nations administration, the building also hosts the offices for a good number of programmes and funds like as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarion Affairs (OCHA) and the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE). The United Nations and its other specialized agencies, programmes and funds have other offices outside the Palace of Nations at office spaces provided by the Swiss Government. The building overlooks towards Lake Geneva and has a clear view of the French Alps. The Palais and its buildings make it the second-largest building complex in Europe after Versailles.
